We are planning for the future of the Abernethy Road area through the Abernethy Road Traffic Study to improve safety and better connect our community.

The study looks at traffic movement through the area and considers safety and amenity improvements. It was prompted due to growing safety concerns, crash data and traffic monitoring.

We are now seeking public questions and submissions on the study.

About the study

About the study

We engaged an independent traffic consultant to conduct the Abernethy Road Traffic Study which looks at traffic movements along Abernethy Road from Fulham Street to Leach Highway.

The study area included five key intersections along Abernethy Road:

  • Fulham Street
  • Gabriel Street
  • Keane Street
  • Scott Street
  • Kew Street

The study was conducted in three stages including data collection and analysis (Stage 1 Report), base model development and calibration (Stage 2 Report), and future demand forecasting and options testing (Stage 3 Report).

Shortlisted scenarios were tested on the following:

Proposed design

Following the multi criteria analysis, the study recommended scenario 6 as the most effective solution. Below is a diagram of the proposed design.

Temporary and immediate measures

Abernethy Road and Gabriel Street Safety Improvements

Works are planned for the intersection of Abernethy Road and Gabriel Street in December to improve safety at this location.

The Gabriel Street intersection has been selected for immediate intervention due to recent crash data and initial findings from the Abernethy Road Traffic Study.

The study has considered crash data along Abernethy Road, between Fulham Street to Leach Highway and highlighted 48 crashes at the Gabriel Street intersection within the last five years.

Temporary safety measures are being implemented as a first step in the project.

Safety Bollards

Safety bollards have been installed along a section of footpath on the west corner of Gabriel Street and Abernethy Road.

The aim of these bollards is to increase safety for pedestrians and surrounding residences.

Abernethy Road and Gabriel Street Central Median Closure

Initially planned for January 2025, public comment on the study and temporary closure of the Abernethy Road median at Gabriel Street has been advanced been pulled forward to December 2024 due to growing safety concerns. Between 2019 and 2023 there were 48 crashes at this intersection, and nine incidents at this intersection since August 2024.

This decision prioritises safety for road users and pedestrians, addressing immediate risks while also supporting the longer-term improvements recommended in the Abernethy Road Traffic Study reports.

The central median at Gabriel Street will be closed to restrict vehicles crossing Abernethy Road and all right turn movements. It will be temporarily changed to left turn in, left turn out only on both sides.

Road users are encouraged to seek alternative routes, and use signalised intersections to cross Abernethy Road.

There will be some disruption while works are carried out, we apologise for any inconvenience this will cause.
