Project update: amended design

As of March 2025, the City of Belmont is progressing with safety improvements along First Street. After monitoring the new treatments and receiving community feedback, we have refined the implemented temporary traffic calming measures.

A staged approach was required to improve this intersection ensures that treatments are monitored and reviewed for road safety and residential amenity.

Project Stages

  • Stage 1 – Installation temporary traffic calming measures
Speed cushions were installed as an immediate measure to slow vehicles and on the approach to the intersection to improve safety.
  • Stage 2 – noise reduction adjustments
Following community feedback, the speed cushions are being modified. The current set-up will be replaced with three smaller speed cushions to maintain traffic calming effects while reducing noise impacts for nearby residents.
  • Stage 3 – permanent raised platform
The permanent stage involves replacing the temporary speed cushions with a raised platform for long-term safety improvements. However, this stage is subject to Western Power approval and wait times before construction can proceed. The approval process is currently at the design stage and must be completed before works can commence.

In addition to these staged works, temporary traffic calming measures including a red asphalt entry statement, new 'Give Way' signs, and pavement markings will be implemented on Bulong Avenue to alert motorists of the need to give way at First Street.

Bulong Avenue and First Street Traffic Calming Project

The City of Belmont are working on a road safety initiative, to address road safety issues and resident concerns at Bulong Avenue and First Street.

The project involves an assessment to identify, treat, monitor, review and report on the intersection to reduce crashes in our community.

The City performed site visits and undertook traffic counts of approach roads and CCTV surveillance to investigate the condition of the intersection.

The Speed Alert Mobile Trailer will be mobilised to slow motorists. With this, a design plan will be drafted for Main Roads approval including speed cushions, red asphalt entry statement, give way signs and pavement markings.

Once implemented, the City will continue to monitor, review, and report on the intersection to determine if additional works at the site are needed.
