Improving habitat on the Faulkner Park Ornamental Lakes island

27 February 2025

The Faulkner Park Ornamental Lakes renewal project is progressing, with key work completed on the Ornamental Lakes island to improve habitat and environmental health.

What’s been done?

  • Invasive weed species have been removed to allow native plants to thrive.
  • The Agonis flexuosa (WA peppermint tree) has been retained following arborist advice.

What’s next?

  • Earthworks and level adjustments to improve the island contours in preparation for future planting.
  • Irrigation system will be extended to the island to support future planting.
  • A sandy beach will be introduced to provide a nesting area for turtles and improve maintenance access.
  • Replanting with native species such as Melaleuca preissiana, Melaleuca viridifolia, and Taxandria linearifolia, which will provide a mix of canopy, shrubs, and bank stabilisation plants.
  • Ongoing monitoring and maintenance will ensure the success of the revegetation.

This project is designed to enhance biodiversity, improve the lake’s visual appeal, and create a healthier space for wildlife and the community.
