Ornamental Lakes wins IPWEA WA Excellence Award

17 March 2026

The City of Belmont has been recognised by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA) WA, receiving an Excellence in Water Projects Award for the Faulkner Civic Precinct Ornamental Lakes Renewal Project.

The IPWEA WA Excellence Awards recognise outstanding public works projects that deliver strong environmental, community and asset‑management outcomes.

City of Belmont Mayor Robert Rossi said the recognition reflects the City’s commitment to delivering high‑quality infrastructure that benefits both the community and the environment.

“This award recognises the vision and care that went into renewing the Ornamental Lakes and creating a place that supports both people and nature.

“What was once a deteriorating stormwater basin has been transformed into a thriving wetland environment and a beautiful space for our community to enjoy,” said Mayor Rossi.

Located within Faulkner Park, the $5.3 million project revitalised a 1970s stormwater compensation basin using water‑sensitive urban design principles to improve water quality and restore natural wetland function.

The renewal introduced extensive native planting, improved habitat for local wildlife and created a healthier ecosystem, while also enhancing the surrounding public space.

New community features delivered through the project include seating and picnic shelters, a timber boardwalk and bridge across the lake, upgraded pathways, and improved lighting and CCTV.

Together, these improvements have created a more accessible, welcoming and environmentally resilient space for people of all ages and abilities.
