Garvey Park Trail Development Plan

The City of Belmont is exploring opportunities to enhance the trail network at Garvey Park, Ascot.

Garvey Park is one of the City's prime riverside public spaces, playing home to major events, natural assets, and supporting a diverse range of recreation activities. Featuring a series of informal trails, the City has received funding through the Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries Trail Planning Grants Program to create a Trail Development Plan for Garvey Park.

The plan will play an important role in delivering a trail network that is well planned and designed, protects Garvey Park's natural assets, and meets the needs of our current and future community

The draft Trail Development Plan was developed in 2024 with consultant Common Ground Trails following extensive community and stakeholder consultation, site analysis, and alignment with State Government frameworks for trail development.

Positioned on a southern meander of the Swan River Garvey Park offers diverse riverside landscapes with a layering of values and stories that highlight its unique natural and cultural evolution.

The vision for the trail network is to provide opportunities for users to connect to these values and stories as they traverse through the park.

Developing the plan with our community

In October and November 2023, the City worked with consultants Common Ground Trails and invited surrounding residents, park users, sporting clubs and the wider community to contribute their ideas and help shape the draft trail plan.

The project received 119 contributions to the Garvey Park Trails Survey and 122 contributions to the interactive Garvey Park Map. Consultation was also undertaken with a number of key user groups and stakeholders to ensure a wide range of perspectives were considered

Key insights:
  • There are significant environmental and cultural heritage values throughout Garvey Park that need to be considered in the trail plan
  • Several different user groups value Garvey Park and its varied attributes
  • The trail plan should consider the facilities in surrounding communities, providing links and new offerings
  • There is an opportunity for artwork and interpretation of natural and cultural values
