Help shape the future of sport and active recreation in our City
Our Recreation Strategy 2022-2025 is nearing the end of its implementation phase, so it’s time for us to reflect on what we’ve achieved and review the strategy for the coming years.
The revised strategy will be informed by updated research and data, City plans and policies, and trends and challenges in sport and active recreation today.
As part of this process, we asked the community to share their experiences, ideas and feedback to inform the strategy and guide how we provide spaces and opportunities for you to be active.
Our strategic priority areas:
-
-
Planning places and spaces
-
Collaboration and partnerships
-
Building community capacity
What we've achieved
Since endorsement of the Recreation Strategy 2022-2025, we've celebrated a number of achievements across the Strategy’s four strategic priorities areas.
How you helped shape the strategy
Engaging with our community
There are many ways to get active in our city, whether its walking, swimming, or playing organised sport. Whether you are already active, or not at all – your input is vital to understanding how can we encourage and support you to be and stay active.
Across April and May 2025 we engaged directly with sporting clubs across the City to capture their experiences, challenges and feedback on the City's approach to recreation.
In June 2025 we reached out to the broader community and asked for their input to help shape the strategies, and help us understand community needs. Feedback could be submitted via a short survey, hard copy form, in-person or in writing.
Contributions were open to people 15 years and older. For people aged under 15 years, their parents/caregivers could fill out the survey on their behalf.
During the consultation period, we received:
What you told us
The contributions and feedback received during community contributions identified common barriers, motivations, and things most important to you.
You can find a full overview of the engagement process, contributions in the Engagement Report.
Key themes and trends
Consistent themes emerged from the contributions provided by key stakeholders, sporting clubs and the wider community.
These themes shaped three consolidated strategic focus areas:
-
Active People
Participation in physical activity, whether organised or informal, across all stages of life is central to building a healthy, connected, and resilient community.
The City will seek to reduce barriers to participation and support opportunities that encourage people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to be active more often.
-
Active Places and Spaces
Well‑planned and well‑designed places and spaces play a critical role in enabling participation in sport and active recreation.
Given the City’s limited capacity to expand public open space, the focus will be on optimising existing facilities and environments to meet current and future community needs.
-
Active Partnerships
Strong partnerships are essential to achieving sustainable sport and active recreation outcomes.
Collaboration with community organisations, sporting clubs, volunteers, schools, neighbouring local governments and State and Federal agencies will enable shared solutions, increased participation, and more effective use of resources.
Next steps
The Draft Active Recreation Strategy will be presented to Council at the Tuesday 26 May Ordinary Council Meeting. The Meeting Agenda will be available closer to the meeting date.
Once the strategy has been endorsed, we'll finalise the document design and make it available on City channels.
We'll them begin implementing the strategy and keeping you updated on the progress.
