Engaging with community

Creative workshops were held in November 2023 by Noongar Whadjuk Ballardong artist Yondee Shane Hansen, welcoming engagement from local community.

These workshops were an opportunity to provide information about the project, empower the community members through participation, collecting stories, creating an artwork and involve them in choosing the wording to be included as part of the final artwork design.

A traditional welcome was held at the commencement of each workshop where local Elder James Kearing held a fire and smoking ceremony and special performance by Djurpin Djindas dancers.

The event was held at the entrance of the Belmont Hub at the start of each days workshops involving students from Belmont City College and local community members, as well as City’s staff and visitors to Belmont Hub.

The workshops included

  • Ceremony of Welcome using firesticks and smoke to cleanse.
  • Gathering community stories.
  • Creating an artwork.
  • Hearing about Yondee's experience and career pathways as a professional artist.
